The People of Ahsea

One percent of the area's population lives in the small town of Ahsea. However, the school will service the larger region surrounding Ahsea, with the total population of more than 40,000.

Walking is the main source of transportation.
Some children will walk over 10 miles to get to the school once it is built. It is a challenge that they are willing to accept since the alternative is no education beyond eighth grade.

Most of the population are farmers and are striving for self-sufficiency.

The Area and Land

Ahsea is located in the northeast corners of Adwa and Aksumite Kingdom (Aksum), believed to be the historic resting place of the Ark of the Covenant, located in the Mehakelegnaw Zone of the Tigray Region.

The area also gains significance as housing two great Ethiopian Saints’ monasteries, which draw pilgrims from all over the country and beyond.

Until recently, this was an extremely remote area. The land is an arid valley, with a neighboring mountain range and meandering river and is approximately the geographic range of greater Los Angeles.

The region is connected with the nearest large city of Adwa by a single unpaved road which is traveled twice a day by a mini-bus that transports passengers and supplies.

The Ethiopian government has increased support to the area, introducing electricity to the main town of Ahsea 24 hours a day and installing a telephone in the town. Surrounding the town are farms and wide open space where the majority of the population lives.
